A Rare Exchange - by Steve L. Conley
Posted on Saturday, December 22 @ 18:42:53 PST by admin

Devotions It was so rare; I could not remember ever seeing anything like it. I was standing close to the register when I heard the lady say. "These are the wrong size; I would like to see if you have another size in the same shoe." I looked up to see a lady standing next to her daughter; the daughter appeared to be in her early twenties.

The salesperson quickly walked to the back of the store and returned with the correct shoe size; the transaction was over quickly and efficiently. You may be tempted at this point to say, "There isn’t anything rare about someone returning an item back to a store and exchanging it for something else"; and you would be correct, but what happened next was truly remarkable, yes, even rare.

As I watched the exchange take place the mother thanked the salesperson and turned to exit the store. The daughter turned in unison with her, then it happened; the daughter took her hand, reached up to her mother’s upper arm and began to walk toward the door, side by side.

I watched thinking that I would see the mother stumble, requiring the extra support from her daughter, and then it occurred to me; the mother was perfectly able to walk by herself without any support. Her daughter simply chose to show her love to her mother in a very special way.

I watched the silhouette of the two walking away and thought to myself, "This is how it is suppose to be." As they approached the exit door; the daughter, still holding onto her mothers arm, took her free hand and swung the door open; allowing her mother to exit first, just ahead of her.

My eye’s followed them all of the way to their car. How privileged I was to witness such love. We place a premium on many things in our life; but in the end they are just things, and things will not last forever.

The love I saw that day between a mother and a daughter is a love that will not only last in this lifetime, but is sure to endure into the next life to come.

With the holidays just around the corner, consider this; the gift you give, may or may not be an expensive one, but giving the gift of yourself, your love, and your time to your family and friends is the most valuable and timeless gift you can give.
